What's all this talk about Feng Shui?

Two seminars scheduled for the end of April

Peter Lung

Everywhere you turn these days someone is talking about Feng Shui. But what, exactly, is Feng Shui? Is it religious? Spiritual? Magical?

"It 's none of that," explains Peter Lung, a professional Feng Shui consultant and owner of World of Feng Shui in Hawaii. "It is actually very scientific. It is the science of your environment, the skill of living in harmony with the energy at your home or office to attract good luck."

Lung, who writes regularly for Feng Shui World magazine, says he is often asked the same questions by his clients. The following are his answers to some of those questions:

Q: What is Feng Shui?

A: Feng Shui works according to the quality of the energies that surround any living or working space. Humans were born with three different kinds of luck – heaven, earth and man luck. Each of these represent the trinity of luck that governs our material well being. Feng Shui is the luck from the earth. It is not a religion or spiritual practice that creates miracles. It does not bring overnight success or change a person's life situation immediately.

Q: What is earth luck?

A: Earth luck is within our control. It is the luck that comes from the environment and gets strengthened when the Feng Shui of one's surroundings is auspicious. Feng Shui luck brings opportunities, improves chances of success, enhances our living condition and creates peace and goodwill in our relationships.

Q: What if my apartment or bedroom is directly above the garage?

A: Living space above the garage is considered inauspicious because it is interpreted as living above a vacuum. As garages are mostly left empty, you can hang a picture of a mountain in the garage; this symbolizes the vacuum being filled up with earth, which is excellent grounding energy for your apartment and house.

Q: We have health problems and are seldom free from pain. How can Feng Shui help us?

A: Pain is usually caused by Chi being blocked inside. Chi Kung exercises should help you to clear the blocks of the flow of Chi. From a Feng Shui perspective, health problems are related to an affliction in the east sector of your house. Please check whether there is a bright light there – if so, remove it. Consider placing a healthy live plant in the wu lou in this area.

Q: How can I energize my career luck?

A: Activate the north sector of your house and office. Hang a metal Windchime and place the fish tank or water fountain in this sector of your home. Do not save money turning off your water fountain at night – it should runs 24 hours a day.

Q: How can I sell my house quickly?

A: You can consider hanging a flying bird at the front entrance with a reasonable selling price on the bird's mouth. Also keep one bright light at the back of the house. This will make it much easier for the house to be sold.

Q: Is it all right for my children to sleep in bunk beds?

A: It is fine; make sure you find their appropriate Feng Shui directions based on the KUA formula.

Q: Can I have a fish tank in the bedroom?

A: Water fixtures such as fish tanks or small ponds are not recommended in the bed room as they cause loss in different areas of one's life – loss of money, of loved ones and of opportunities. Even pictures of mountains with waterfall scenes are not acceptable.

Q: How can I attract love?

A: You should activate the southwest corner of your bedroom and living room by using bright lights to shine on a pair of crystal or jade mandarin ducks, or on pair of pink candles. If possible, sleep with your head pointing in your nien yen direction based on the Kua formula.

Lung will host two seminars on Saturday, April 30, at the Hawaii Prince Hotel.
