Hawaii Campus expands Bachelor of Science program
 |
| Faculty at University of Phoenix, Hawaii Campus help students compete in today's business world by offering high-tech programs, including a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology/Visual Communication. |
In response to a growing demand by employers, University of Phoenix, Hawaii Campus will begin to offer a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology/Visual Communica-tion degree program this August.
According to the U.S. Depart-ment of Labor, the growth of the Internet and the expansion of the World Wide Web (the graphical portion of the Internet) have generated a variety of occupations related to the design, development and maintenance of Web sites.
Unique features of the new BSIT/VC degree program, include:
1. Business Context
The Bachelor of Science in Information Technology/Visual Communication (BSIT/VC) program has three major content areas:
• Business • Communication • Technology
The BSIT focuses on the analysis, design and development of information technology within the context of business systems.
The program's specialization Visual Communication in addition to the information technology component concentrates on the design and development of digital media presentations.
The BSIT/VC uses graphic design and technology tools to create visual communications that are relevant to organizations. As a result, the BSIT/VC graduate possesses a diverse portfolio including Web site development, rich media advertising, corporate reports, business presentations, instructional materials, animated movies and electronic publications that fulfill business and training needs.
This portfolio positions the BSIT/VC graduate as someone with a technology background who is prepared to have an immediate and positive impact in a business or training setting.

2. eResource Materials
The BSIT/VC student will find eRsourceÆ a reflection of what they are learning.
Virtual Organizations, simulations, tutorials and eBooks are not only the BSIT/VC student's course materials, but they are also the type of products that students learn to create.
3. Tools
The BSIT/VC uses software tools that are outside traditional IT, such as Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Flash and Dreamweaver.
4. Artistic Talent
The BSIT/VC does not require the student to be an artist. New software has advanced to the point that it now allows individuals without the ability to draw or paint to still create great images and artistic designs.
Career Opportunities
Career opportunities in the Visual Communication Field for graduates of the program include work in:
• Marketing departments creating rich media advertising. • Public relations departments producing business presentations and corporate reports. • Printing or copying departments producing electronic documents. • Any department that maintains its own Web site or produces its own promotional materials.
• IT departments doing Web design and development.
• Training departments creating tutorials and training materials.
• Educational institutions creating electronic instructional materials.
• Non-profit organizations (including churches) producing newsletters, event promotions, and Web sites.
The regular BSIT graduate will work within or will liaison with the IT department. The BSIT/VC graduate may work within the Web department of IT but may just as likely work within Creative Services, Marketing or Communications.
